Arthrostim® Instrument
Patients have demonstrated improved balance, coordination, posture, kinesthetic sense & proprioception following
ArthroStim® – Instrument Adjusting Neuro-mechanical Stimulation.
Dr. LeGault uses a variety of methods to promote natural health and wellness. Traditionally, chiropractors have used single high-energy thrusting and other movements to adjust areas of the body.
The adjustments produce a series of events into motion. Not only do these precise Chiropractic adjustments move bones and restore proper joint function, but they stimulate ‘neural receptors’. These receptors, in turn, produce positive nerve impulses which relay crucial positive information to the brain.
The brain depends on this “neurological feedback flow” to update its awareness about an area. Once the brain evaluates the changes prompted by the adjustment, it sends the joints, cells and tissues self-correcting commands to bring about healing changes.
Recently, a variety of new ways to produce this important “neurological feedback flow” have been developed. The AthroStim® instrument is one of the most effective and comfortable tools for creating this valuable input and positive brain feedback.
The ArthroStim® produces a speedy thrust and recoil motion, similar to the way your Pittsburgh chiropractor, Dr. LeGault, uses his hands to adjust the vertebrae or other joints of your body. The benefit of the instrument is that it performs this high-velocity, low-amplitude motion 12 times per second, and it targets a very precise area. The force of the thrust radiates through the joint and surrounding tissues; releasing trigger points, restoring joint dysfunction, and positively influencing the nervous system and receptors. The results are better balance, coordination, posture, kinesthetic sense and proprioception.

About the ArthroStim® Instrument
The AthroStim® Instrument delivers 12-14 incremental thrusts per second. By dividing the energy of a single thrust into rapid successive inputs, the AthroStim® modulates the (peak) force. This allows the doctor to administer an extremely comfortable, and highly effective treatment.
The use of the ArthroStim® does not produce popping or cracking noises in the joint. It is a gentle, mechanical method of stimulating nerves and easing the joints back into alignment that is basically an extension of the chiropractor’s hands.
The Doctor of Chiropractic (Dr. LeGault) can exert just the right amount of pressure needed by adjusting the force of the thrust, up or down from merely a few ounces all the way up to 40 pounds, to treat a lot of body areas, not only on the spine (ex: shoulder, knee, ankle, wrist, foot).
ArthroStim’s® speed, gentleness and accuracy are also recommended for populations that may have trouble or difficulty relaxing, such as children and the elderly.
The ArthroStim’s® movement stimulates a patient’s special nerve receptors, called mechanoreceptors. However, at the same time it avoids stimulating the nociceptors, the sensory nerve receptors responsible for sending pain signals to the central nervous system and other potentially negative effects.
Mechanoreceptors – are sensory receptors responsible for detecting the proper motion and alignment of the body’s muscles and joints, signaling that all is well. Mechanoreceptors are stimulated by mechanical input such as touch, muscle stretching, and joint motion. These receptors are involved in ALL of our daily activities, such as walking, buttoning the shirt, typing and more.
The use of the AthroStim® allows for faster results and greater patient satisfaction. If this seems like a form of treatment that may interest you , consult with Dr. LeGault and ask if it is possible to merge the AthroStim® into your treatment plan.
Individuals and conditions that may benefit from the AthroStim® include:
Dr. LeGault may use the AthroStim® Instrument by itself or in combination with other adjusting methods and therapies; it is dependent on the approach that is best for you. Due to the positive effects of the AthroStim®, it is a form of neuromuscular re-education used to improve balance, coordination, posture, kinesthetic sense and proprioception. Due to the speed of the AthroStim®, it can also be used to stimulate meridian points via acupressure.

How effective is AthroStim® treatment?
The secret to the instrument’s effectiveness comes from its controlled repetitive input. This input produces a cumulative “snowballing’ effect on neural receptors. By utilizing controlled, incremental thrusts, the AthroStim® stimulates specific neural receptors (mechanoreceptors) without activating undesirable pain receptors, thereby producing an important inhibitory effect on negative feedback pathways.
By balancing mechanoreception/ proprioception and inhibiting the negative pathways activated by the vertebral subluxation complex, Dr. LeGault can help alleviate pain, restore joint and soft tissue function, and stop negative hormonal changes (ex: raised cortisol levels).
